Development Characteristics
To face the challenging tasks of transforming traditional businesses into high-tech industries and innovating emerging technologies in southern Taiwan, the College strives to make significant contributions toward solving society’s 21st century challenges. Taiwan high-speed rail, Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transport, a multifunctional trade park, Tainan Science Park, Kaohsiung Science Park, and Kaohsiung Biotechnology Park have been established to meet these challenges. These technological challenges in southern Taiwan have created a high demand for qualified engineering graduates.
The mission of the College is simple. It strives to meet society’s needs through education, research, and public service. At the College of Engineering, we embody the Government’s overall industrial policy and goals: cultivating a new generation of engineering leaders and conducting groundbreaking research. We are committed to working with the public and private sectors to bring new knowledge and innovations to address complex challenges.

Goals
The College of Engineering was established in 2003. It is the home to more than 60 professors who form a network of researchers at the frontier of modern technology. Both professors and students have access to various educational resources, and have unparalleled opportunities in both basic and applied research. Currently, we have four departments and one graduate institute, listed in a chronically order.
Department of Electrical Engineering:

cultivating talent in electronics, information technology, optoelectronics, semiconductors, microelectronic devices and communications/networking technology, and upgrading traditional electrical engineering in southern Taiwan. We focus on 4 major areas of expertise: communications, optoelectronics, microelectronics, and computers.
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering:

In light of the country’s strong demand for basic construction and regional development, we nurture students into tomorrow’s leaders with multidisciplinary skills and global vision. Research focuses on four areas: new technology in natural disaster prevention, environmental conservation, green engineering, and system engineering.
Graduate Institute of Urban Development and Architecture:

The core courses focus on urban and environmental development. With hands-on design and practice, the Institute tands at the forefront of this technology.
Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering:

Our initiatives focus on three major themes: nano and molecular engineering, materials technology, and biochemical engineering.
Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering:

Our initiatives focus on four major themes: intelligent systems, computer science theory, computer systems, and networks and communication. Our graduates are not only able to contribute in the practice of computer and information engineering, but to bring the strength of an engineering education to related fields such as mathematics, chemistry, physics, life sciences, finance, and management.
Regional Economics and Urban Planning Center:

It provides services in special topics research, special topics seminars, information collection, and distribution. The program embodies the Government’s and the region’s developmental goals to strengthen southern Taiwan’s economic and urban development.
Built-Environment Sustainable Technology Center:

BEST center’s short-term projects focus on the continuing and sustainable technology used in a large wooden structure on campus, specifically the design and construction of the student center.

Future Outlook
The College is centrally located in southern Taiwan’s industrial region and its science-based industrial parks. With this geographical advantage, we definitely have the responsibility to produce outstanding engineering graduates and innovative technologies for society. The College is constantly innovating engineering education and collaborating with industry, and is well on the road becoming a leading engineering institution in Taiwan. With these practical objectives, we will accomplish the following:
Develop new initiatives and directions across departments and the College.
Design new course offerings, and create new field of study, majors, and graduate programs.
Expand facilities including cutting-edge laboratories and research equipment.
Develop new research initiatives and grant applications.
Strengthen partnerships with industry and offer courses to meet their needs.
Initiate alliances and collaborations with corporations and institutes; showcase research results and innovations.
Establish university-wide research institutes and centers to strengthen research across the University.
Engage in active student recruitments and raise the admission standards.
Create a Ph.D. program for all departments at the College. Cultivate advanced level engineering professional and increase faculty’s research productivity.
Build the sharing of interdepartmental interests across broad areas. Establish interdisciplinary research programs, laboratories, centers across the University.
Sponsor and participate in international academic exchange to broaden faculty and students’ horizons for globalization.
Create new departments and institutes meeting the nation’s economic and developmental needs.
